The French government is shifting to other open source software such as Linux instead of Windows and OpenOffice instead of Microsoft Office.

Monday, December 14, 2009: The French military is now using the Thunderbird client on over 80,000 computers as it finds Mozilla's latest email client more secure than Microsoft Outlook. The department found Mozilla's open source design permitted France to build extensions for security, while Microsoft's proprietary software allowed no extensions to be made.

According to Reuters, "France's military chose open source software after an internal government debate that began in 2003 and culminated in a 6 November 2007, directive requiring state agencies Seek maximum technological and commercial independence."

The military has released some of its work to the public under the name 'TrustedBird' and co-branded it with Mozilla.

The French government is also shifting to other open source software such as Linux instead of Windows and OpenOffice instead of Microsoft Office.

Reuters quoted Lieutenant-Colonel Frederic Suel, ministry of defence as saying, "They may move beyond government, because TrustedBird's security extensions make it transposable to large international companies."

Microsoft Presents World's Smallest Touchscreen

The software giant Microsoft recently presented its 2.4 inches square touchscreen which claims to be the smallest in the world. Though the device is small, it was developed in a way so that users with fat fingers can try it.

Researchers working on Microsoft's latest invention presented their device at the company's annual TechFest held at the company's campus located in Redmond, Washington. They showed a prototype gadget with touchscreen on the rear side, a small display screen located on the front and input buttons found on the side.

The device is called Nanotouch and its size is half the size of a usual smartphone.

Patrick Baudisch, one of the researchers working on the Nanotouch project, said: "On first sight, touch-screens seem to allow for particular compactness, because they integrate input and screen into the same physical space. The opposite is true, however, because the user's fingers occlude contents and prevent precision."

He mentioned that you can even see your finger when using the Nanotouch, and are able to see what you are inputting. The features of Microsoft's device make it possible to create much smaller gadgets without losing the accuracy.

With the help of a touchpad on the back, one is able to select or drag certain items on the screen, having the full screen always visible.

The Information Management Journal/September / October 2007- Today’s explosion of electronic data, coupled with the December 2006 amendments to the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure (FRCP) concerning electronically stored information (ESI), requires information and legal professionals to expand their knowledge about handling electronic discovery. The recent changes to the FRCP include:

* Definitions and safe harbor provisions for the routine alterations of electronic files during routine operations such as back ups [Amended Rule 37(f)]
* Information about how to deal with data that is not reasonably accessible [Amended Rule 26(b)(2)(B)]
* How to deal with inadvertently produced privileged material [Amended Rule 26(b)(5)]
* ESI preservation responsibilities and the pre-trial conference. [Amended Rule 26(f)]
* Electronic file production requests [Amended Rules 33(d), 34, 26(f)(3), 34(b)(iii)]
There are many opinions about how ESI should be planned for, managed, organized, stored, and retrieved. Some of the available options are extremely costly in terms of their required financial and time commitments. Constantly changing technologies only add to the confusion. One area of confusion is the distinction between computer forensics and electronic discovery; there is a significant difference. These are described in the sidebar Computer Forensics vs. Electronic Discovery.
Making the Right Choices
Successfully responding to e-discovery within the constraints of the amended FRCP requires organizations to make many critical decisions that will affect the collection and processing of ESI.
Collection Decisions
The following questions need immediate answers:
1. Are e-mail files part of this project? If so, do any key people maintain an Internet e-mail account, in addition to their corporate accounts?
The sheer volume of transactions for large e-mail providers prohibits the storage of massive amounts of mail files. Many Internet e-mail account providers, such as AOL, BellSouth, and Comcast, retain their e-mail logs no longer than 30 days. If a case could potentially require the exploration of e-mail from Internet accounts, the discovery team must expeditiously request the records, or they may be gone forever. This usually requires a subpoena. In rare cases, fragments of Internet e-mail may be recovered forensically from an individual’s hard drive.

F-Secure has released a new Internet Security 2010 software featuring redesigned interface coupled with very easy to use parental control features that you can setup during your initial installation while F-Secure is downloading updates in the background, this new build is easy on system resources and F-Secure claims to have 60% faster virus scans than the previous version.

Our installation of the F-Secure Internet Security 2010 on a test PC having C2D E6320 and 2.5 GB RAM was finished in around 1 minute, after a restart and verification of the key, it showed the programs requesting Internet access like Steam client and others installed in our system, after clicking allow couple of times we were good to go , downloading updates and further installation took another 15 minutes on our 1 Mbps connection.
The parental control settings in the F-Secure 2010 Internet security are one of the easiest out there, so lets have a look at the parental controls

System Scanning- Virus, Spyware removal
The overall speed of the scanning was good, our almost full 160 HDD including lots of software, games, applications, was scanned in 1 hours and 4 minutes, however there isn’t a pause scan option while scanning the hard drive so if you stop the scan, you would have to run it again from scratch. Pause scan option is particularly good when you just want to Hibernate your PC after pausing the scan and then turn it on later to resume scan from where it left, very helpful these days as HDD capacities have grown manifolds and scanning takes time. It detected all the viruses we have in our virus-pendrive with ease and the Anti-Spyware was pretty hard on the advertising agencies, and detected their tracking cookies as Spyware.

Other thoughts: After installation of F-Secure our Local Area Network stopped working, we weren’t able to access files of our test PC from other PCs on LAN, Even after configuring again with the Windows “Set up a home or small office network” it didn’t work, nor does it showed any warnings or asked for permission. I have to set this up manually by going to Settings -> Firewall -> Firewall Settings -> Trusted Network Adaptor -> Select your Network Interface Card.
It was not able to detect our LAN IC on our Intel DG965RY motherboard, after selecting the network IC, local network access was restored. This might be a problem specific to our system.

It's not even worth trying to keep track of the piles upon piles of pocket camcorders on the market today, but only a couple shoot 1080p (UPDATE: almost). And only one does it in such a minuscule package.

Spec for spec, the Picsio is a near-match for the Kodak Zi8—currently the best camrecorder on the market, to my mind. That means multiple video modes, from 30fps 1080p (UPDATE: Though it appears the actual resolution is 1440 x 1080, not the normal 1920 x 1080. More on that—which isn't actually a huge deal—here.) to 60fps 720p to regular old VGA, 8-megapixel still shooting, a mechanical macro mode switch, image stabilization, HDMI out and SD storage.
What it doesn't have in microphone inputs (the Zi8 had a line-in jack) it more than makes up for in MicroUSB charging (the Zi8 had a USB to DC charger). Price is also comparable, listing at $200 but shipping from Amazon for $180. Here it pictured next to a Zi6, which is roughly the same size as the Zi8. As you can see, JVC's camcorder is small—it's sized like some of the daintier Flip cams, but with much more impressive guts.
